The Funny Side

One of the things I love about this disease is that every. single. thing. that Addison does is 100% authentic.  Sure, she tries to be sneaky sometimes, she tries to be ornery sometimes, but bless her heart she just isn't any good at it.  And I guess that we are one of the few parents that can honestly say that our child has never lied to them.  Her lack of talking kind of prevents that from happening.

Last night was a perfect example of this authentic behavior.  She let us both know that she was ready to be tickled.  Not later, not in a little while ... right now.  She jumps up onto our bed and climbs into the middle.  She starts moving around ... full body extension, then legs and arms going crazy, and finally into a protective-shell fetal position to protect her arms, legs and toes from the tickle monster.  She will grab a hand and place it on her foot (piggers) or under her arm (mush), or move her body into a hand to precipitate a tickle.

Her giggles are contagious.  Her face is even more beautiful than usual when she laughs.  I always say that she is the happiest child that I have ever seen.  I will always be grateful for that.  What autism has taken away from her can be depressing at times.  But what it GIVES her and us is immeasurable.  She is a unique individual that is full of love.  What parent wouldn't want that?
